Kanagawa » Miura peninsula, Yokosuka » Yokohama
Located at the scenic Kannonzaki, on the eastern edge of the nature-rich Miura Peninsula, the Yokosuka Art Museum is at one with the sea, forest, and nature. It has a wonderful location facing the ocean and is surrounded by beautiful forests on the other three sides.
The building is half buried underground, and the exterior is a distinctive structure covered with glass and steel plates. The exhibition galleries are vaulted, with holes drilled in the steel interior walls to let in abundant natural light.
Upon entering the museum, visitors are greeted by soft light and beautiful views of Tokyo Bay through circular windows cut into circles.
The museum was selected by an art information website as one of the “Top 5 Museums with the Best View!” out of about 450 museums in Japan for its unique architecture and spectacular views.
There are also free spaces such as the annex Rokuro Taniuchi Museum, library, penthouse, and rooftop plaza.
Rokuro Taniuchi Museum
Rokuro Taniuchi had a studio in Yokosuka City during his lifetime, and his works are on permanent display.
The museum’s main collection consists of approximately 5,000 works by artists associated with Yokosuka and the Miura Peninsula, works on the subject of Yokosuka and the Miura Peninsula, works depicting the “sea,” and works that provide an overview of modern and contemporary Japanese art.
Exhibitions are held four times a year, and selected works are displayed according to the theme. A variety of special exhibitions are also held.
Library
There is an open-air library with a collection of approximately 30,000 books. In addition to specialized books on art, the library also contains art magazines, materials related to current exhibitions, and picture books from overseas.
Rooftop Plaza
As you climb the stairs and reach the rooftop plaza, you will be greeted by a spectacular view of Tokyo Bay. It is a perfect vantage point from which to marvel at the number of ships passing by on the water, almost like a painting.
You can feel the fresh sea breeze and sunshine. This place has also been chosen as a “holy place for lovers.
Italian Restaurant
The Italian restaurant, where a famous chef serves as the executive chef, is also very popular.
Visitors can enjoy Italian cuisine using locally produced and consumed ingredients while watching ships coming and going along the Uraga Channel from indoor seats facing the sea or outdoor terrace seats with a wall of glass.
