This is a harbor green park where the Sailing Ship Nippon Maru is displayed on a floating structure.
The park was the first park developed in the Minato Mirai area, and includes the Nippon Maru, the exhibition dock, and the Yokohama Minato Museum, a maritime museum.
The Nippon Maru and the exhibition dock are designated as National Important Cultural Properties.
Sailing Ship Nippon Maru
The Nippon Maru served as a sailing training ship for the Ministry of Education from 1930.
Because of her beautiful appearance, she was called the “Swan of the Pacific” or “Lady of the Sea.
After her retirement in 1984, she has been displayed as a floating exhibit at the exhibition dock in the park since 1985.
Normally, her sails are folded, but 12 times a year, all 29 sails are unfurled for a full sail display.
The ship is 97 m long, 13 m wide, and the main mast is 46 m high (above the water).
Nippon Maru Exhibition Dock
The first dock of the Yokohama Dockyard, completed in 1898.
It is 204m long, 34m wide at the top, 23m wide at the bottom, and 11m deep in the dock.
Yokohama Port Museum and Ryohei Yanagihara Art Museum
This museum is dedicated to the Port of Yokohama.
The museum has exhibits on the history of the Port of Yokohama since the arrival of the black ships, a ship-handling simulator, and a VR theater with interactive content, and also houses the Ryohei Yanagihara Art Museum, which displays a variety of works including picture books, oil paintings, and lithographs by Ryohei Yanagihara, known for his advertising designs and ship paintings.
The building is semi-subterranean so as not to obstruct the view of the Nippon Maru.
