Kanagawa » Yokohama Motomachi, Yokohama Chinatown
The Hotel New Grand, founded in 1927, is the only classic city hotel in existence, and is highly regarded as a building of great architectural value.
There are two buildings: the main building and the tower building. The main building has a classical atmosphere that evokes a sense of history and an imposing atmosphere that retains the style of the past.
In particular, the distinctive three-tiered structure of the base, lobby, and guest rooms, with its delicate interior design, hall, and banquet halls, give visitors a sense of Yokohama’s history and traditions.
A wedding hall is also attached to the hotel, and the building and interior design provide an experience as if you were lost in a scene from a movie.
The unique atmosphere of Hotel New Grand is frequently used as a location for Japanese films and has appeared in many movies and dramas.
The tower building, on the other hand, has a new, modern design and offers a night view of Minato Mirai.
Known as the birthplace of Western-style cuisine, another attraction of this building is that you can enjoy authentic Western-style cuisine.
History
The city of Yokohama was devastated by the Great Kanto Earthquake, and as part of the reconstruction efforts, the “Gaikokujin Hotel Construction” led to the construction of the Hotel New Grand.
Established in 1927, the current main building, designed by Jin Watanabe, is a typical classic hotel.
It has a unique atmosphere with its luxurious Western-style construction and Japanese design, and Gagaku (traditional Japanese court music) is played in the main dining room.
Thanks to the efforts of its first chairman, Takashi Isaka, Keikichi Doi from Toyo Kisen Kaisha, and Alfonzo Dunant, who was invited from Paris, the Hotel New Grand had a staff with advanced knowledge of service, lodging, and food and beverage.
The kitchen produced dishes such as doria, Neapolitan, and pudding a la mode, which later became widely known, and produced the chefs of many famous restaurants, thus greatly influencing Japanese food culture.
Since its opening, the restaurant has been visited by many members of the royal family and celebrities, and Douglas MacArthur has also stayed there. After the war, it was used as officers’ quarters for the occupying forces, but has since been offered as “MacArthur’s Suite” where ordinary guests can also stay.
