Kanagawa » Hakkeijima Island (Yokohama)
The Hakkei-jima area, not far from Yokohama, is a scenic spot known as "Kanazawa Hakkei. Visitors can view the modern version of "Hakkei" as depicted by the Edo period painter Hiroshige Utagawa.
Isogo is located in the southeastern part of Yokohama City and is one of the 18 wards of Yokohama City. The area faces Negishi Bay and is largely reclaimed land. Its history dates back to the Meiji era, when the Horiwari River was excavated and its mouth was filled with the leftover soil to create a wharf.
The main attractions in the Hakkeijima area include the Yokohama Children's Science Museum (also known as the Hamagin Children's Space & Science Museum), the Isogo Marine Fishing Facility, and the Yokohama City Tram Preservation Museum.
The Yokohama Children's Science Museum is a full-scale space science museum located in Yokodai, and is directed by Dr. Yasunori Matogawa, a space engineer and professor emeritus at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) (as of November 2015).
The facility is popular among both children and adults for its daily science shows that allow visitors to enjoy familiar science, a space discovery room, and an area where visitors can experience astronaut training.
Isogo Marine Fishing Facility is an ocean fishing spot facing Negishi Bay, where you and your children can enjoy fishing in peace. It is also equipped with a fishing tackle store, restrooms, and a parking lot, making it a popular date spot for couples.
The Yokohama Tram Preservation Museum is a museum that exhibits materials related to streetcars that were active in Yokohama during the Showa period (1926-1989). The actual tram cars on display allow visitors to feel the atmosphere of those days.
The Hakkeijima area is also home to an aquarium, an amusement park, a tidepool, and many other hands-on outdoor spots. The development of Hakkeijima began in the Showa period (1926-1989), when large-scale development of the bay area resulted in the loss of recreational areas for citizens.
Today, Hakkeijima is one of the most popular leisure spots in Yokohama City, including Hakkeijima Sea Paradise and Umi-no-Park, where visitors can enjoy barbecues and tide-pooling.
